Summary

Cashwalk is a legit way to turn your step activity into income (in the form of gift cards). But it’s not completely passive, which means it won’t be a fit for everyone.

How Cashwalk Works

YouTube video

Established in 2019, Cashwalk pays you for tracking your step activity.

The app is available for both Android and iOS devices, and is well-rated in both app stores.

It works by syncing with your phone’s built-in pedometer function to measure how many steps you take.

Every 100 steps you take translates into 1 “Stepcoin.” You can earn up to 100 of these coins a day, and it takes 5000 coins to cash in for a $5 gift card.

If you max out your coin earnings every day, you’ll have enough for that gift card in 50 days.

cashwalk gift card options

Important Note: Cashwalk has gotten consistently worse over the last 12-18 months. For example, gift card prices have increased more than 50% since this screenshot!

At press time, Cashwalk had the following gift card options:

  • Amazon
  • Walmart
  • Google Play
  • Apple
  • eBay
  • Starbucks
  • Banana Republic
  • Barnes and Noble
  • Chipotle
  • Fanatics
  • Fandango
  • Gap
  • Hulu
  • Macy’s
  • NFL Shop
  • Old Navy
  • Regal Entertainment
  • Sephora
  • Southwest Airlines
  • StubHub
  • Uber
  • Ulta
  • Whole Foods
  • Dunkin’ Donuts
  • Jamba Juice
  • Taco Bell
  • Subway
  • Spotify
  • Nintendo
  • Xbox
  • IHOP
  • Nike

Not all stores had options starting at 5,000 coins, but the redemption value is consistent across the board at $5 per 5,000 coins.

I’d love to see Cashwalk add a PayPal, Venmo, or bank transfer option, but as of this writing, you can only redeem for gift cards.

How to Maximize Your Cashwalk Earnings

The biggest drawback to Cashwalk is that it’s not entirely passive. If you want to convert your steps into coins, you have to manually open the app and tap the treasure box.

Set Up the Cashwalk Widget

Setting up a homescreen widget reminds you to deposit your coins whenever you unlock your phone. On my device, it looks like this:

Remember to Bank Your Coins

The problem is your coin “bank” or treasure box maxes out at 100 coins — even if you walk 10 miles. And, if you don’t remember to cash them in before midnight, they disappear.

Otherwise you’re not really getting credit for all those steps.

Watch the Bonus Videos

In the center of the app’s home screen, you’ll see the “Daily Lucky Box” section. These are a set of several video advertisements that pay you for watching them.

My first one was worth 500 coins, but subsequent videos have only been worth 5-15 coins apiece.

Play the Lottery

The Lottery section of the app gives you another opportunity to earn coins. If you click on one of the options, you’ll see a popup inviting you to “check out trending videos and get more chances to win.”

After you wait for the “trending video” (read: advertisement) to end, you can play a scratch-off game that gives you extra coins just for tapping the screen.

Every time I’ve done it, I’ve only gotten 1 coin — worth roughly two-tenths of a cent — so it hasn’t really been worth it.

Share with Friends?

You can theoretically earn 100 bonus coins for every friend who joins with your referral code. Your friend will get 100 bonus coins when they sign up as well.

The reason I say “theoretically” is I’ve referred hundreds of users at this point and have seen approximately zero bonus coins.

So don’t bank on this as an earning method, even though Cashwalk advertises it.

Why is Cashwalk Giving People Free Money?

Wait … what’s the catch?

I’m with you — whenever an app promises free money, I get a little skeptical, too.

Cashwalk is essentially a creative advertising business. Each time you open the app to deposit your coins, you’ll see an ad pop up.

There’s another banner ad at the bottom of the app.

And whenever you open one of the “Daily Lucky Boxes,” you’ll have to watch an ad before you receive your bonus coins.

All that advertiser money must be enough to cover the cost of the gift cards!

Cashwalk Customer Support

Looking to contact Cashwalk customer support?

You’ll need to have the Mail App set up on your phone and use the “Contact Us” link in the app.

The support email on their website is listed as support@cashwalk.io, but does not appear to be monitored.

Cashwalk Alternatives

There are a few other walking apps and background activity apps that pay you. Here are some of Side Hustle Nation’s favorites.

Miles

The Miles app gives you “frequent flyer miles” for all the travel you do, whether walking, biking, driving, riding, or flying.

By letting the app track your location, you’ll earn free points that can be redeemed for gift cards. This one may be best for heavy commuters though — it takes 1,000-2,000 miles to earn a $1 Amazon gift card.

Still, every dollar counts and the app just runs in the background. After you install it, you don’t have to do anything to rack up your miles.

At press time, you can get 75 bonus miles when you join through my referral link.

StepBet

A friend of mine reported earning around $150 a year with StepBet, which gamifies your walking goals with group step challenges.

stepbet

Bet on yourself to meet your walking goals. If you hit your own step goals every week for the entire game, you divide the “pot” with the other winners. That means you win back your own investment plus profit.

If you miss your weekly goal, you’re out of the running.

HealthyWage

If you’re serious about losing weight, you can actually win money for doing it through HealthyWage. Enter how many pounds you want to lose and your timeline into their “prize calculator” to see how much you can win.

Nielsen

Nielsen rewards you for sharing Internet usage behaviors on up to 3 devices — your computer, smartphone, and tablet. The app is non-intrusive and doesn’t slow down your devices. Users report earning up to $50 a year.

MobileXpression

Similarly, MobileXpression pays you for data from your mobile phone.

make extra money with mobilexpression

Download their app and allow it to work in the background, recording your browsing habits. Realistically, Mobilexpression is probably worth around $20 a year, and you’ll earn a free $5 gift card after your first week.
