Do you know Jon Dykstra from FatStacksBlog.com? I’ve been following his work since last summer and have been really impressed.
(Thanks to Chad from LongerDays for the intro!)
Jon is a former attorney turned full-time entrepreneur, and he’s the master of building high quality niche blogs and monetizing them to $10k-20k per month in record time.
(Sixty days to $10k in one case.)
We’ve covered niche sites in the past, both the “traditional” variety with Spencer Haws and the one-page “micro” variety with Kurt Elster, but the type of sites Jon focuses on are kind of a different animal.
In a way, he sets out to build an authoritative brand in a particular space.
On the call, we use the example of a snow sports site, which in years past may have been considered too broad. Niche down to something like “powder ski reviews,” experts might have said.
Jon takes the opposite approach: broader appeal means more visitors and more ad revenue.

For any blogger who wants to make some passive income with their blog, this list of ideas was really nice. The idea of being a 6 figure blogger in a year may be tough for some but I am sure it can happen. Thank you for sharing!
A year is definitely tough to do! But kudos to those who do. People make much more money online than people realize!

Jon really has some amazing tips – some which are obvious but taken for granted by many bloggers.
For example putting in the work and publishing consistently and enjoying blogging, sometimes to the extent of using money to grow it (traffic, audience, reach)…and of course patience.
I’ve also checked some of his materials and have learnt from his blog.
Earning this type of income even in 4-5 years of blogging is a dream to many, so he’s clearly knocking it out of the park. Really thrilled to find about these strategies.
Very interesting to hear about someone actively making money delivering impressions. That’s not a model which is easy to sustain — CPM prices continue to drop, ad-blockers are rampant. Are you able to share some of the links his monetized sites? I listened closely, but I didn’t hear any URLs mentioned (and only the “pop culture site” mentioned as a theme.) Also, good to hear Website Magazine is sponsoring the podcast — I’m a longtime subscriber myself and it’s a great publication.
Correct — Jon requested not to disclose the blog URLs.
I am checking out the guide now. I have struggled a bit to get my blog to consistently return $1K a month, so I’m ripe for improvement. Excited to learn about fresh approaches to really pulling in the $$$.
Inspiring… got some really great ideas. Thanks Nick and Jon.
How cool I’m 8 and blogged for one year I made $30 I want to learn more.
As far as not knowing which sites are Jon’s, I found 2 of them in about 30 seconds.
