I don’t remember exactly how Sean Marshall and I first connected.

He says it may have been through one of my Fiverr gigs, but what I do remember is following the profile link of one is comments here on SideHustleNation, and landing on the FamilyRocketship.com site.

Sean’s story is one that immediately intrigued me.

Here’s a guy who built an online business, and had the courage to up and move to Cozumel, Mexico — with his wife and 3 young daughters.

It’s not your typical single-23-year-old-dude digital nomad type of story, though Sean’s business itself is simple enough to be replicated.

I’m not just saying that — he’s actually got a Udemy course subtitled “Clone My Business” (that he’s offered at 70% off to Side Hustle Show listeners!).

This is a fun chat about hustling for business and building a lifestyle on your own terms. I think you’re going to like it, even if you have no desire to move abroad. You can hear Sean’s genuine excitement and desire to help others in a similar situation escape the rat race.

  1. Timing couldn’t be more perfect with this Nick! Sean’s story is right in line with what my wife & I are doing right now…even down to the Orange County part, so I can definitely relate. My wife just put in her 2-weeks notice to launch out as a digital marketer. I signed up for Sean’s Udemy course (thanks for the discount Sean & Nick) and can’t wait to get to it!
And cheers to you on making it 92 episodes – I look forward to every Thursday! That 100 episode milestone is right around the corner.

  3. Great show! Always inspiring to hear from another family man who has made outside of the typical corporate life. I have built a few wordpress sites for friends and family and tried a few businesses on the side but nothing I felt comfortable enough to focus 100% on. I just bought your class – going to go through it and try to get some processes around my website building efforts. Thanks for the motivation!

      • Aloha, Nick! Yes, definitely, because this is the kind of business I already have. ; ) Sean and I are online buds and I’m always inspired by what he and his family have accomplished. They’re the real deal! Our families both firmly believe in the importance of family lifestyle design.

My husband and I have a common “dream lifestyle” which is to be utterly devoted in time, energy, and other resources to our faith, family, and the causes we care about. We never wanted to be too swamped at our day jobs to miss a soccer game or be too cash-poor to take a trip on a whim or be too busy to volunteer in our community. So we built several online passive income businesses and got out of debt, and now we homeschool our children, travel, and do lots of fun things while still living in our native Hawai’i where we’re very active in our community. Taking care of ourselves enough to where we can really help take care of others is our definition of a dream lifestyle.

  5. Am I the only over 25 year old on this site who hasn’t retired yet? LOL. Just kidding. Sometimes about getting close to turning 40 and still struggling that makes you feel left out. I know I’ll hit on something big eventually. Thanks for the great site Nick.

    • Haha some days I feel the same way when I see all these “young kids” doing amazing things! It used to be while watching baseball or football — he was born WHEN?? — but now it’s business :)

  6. Thanks for another great podcast, Nick!

Being a family guy myself it was neat to hear Sean’s story how he built a business and traveled with his family.

I also really like the fact that he not only walks the walk but also now teaches others how to do clone his business (yes, I sure did get his Udemy course ;-))

  7. Another great podcast Nick, thank you for your great work and continuing to bring us quality each week.

I’m very impressed with Sean and what he’s been able to acheive, really inspiring (like pretty much all of your guests). He reminds me a lot of Pat Flyyn and looks to be heading toward similar success. Awesomeness!

Nick – just discovered your podcast and really enjoy it – thanks! Great to hear from different side hustle entrepreneurs taking action and getting results.
Sean – some great points about the power of networking, giving away your best stuff and building reciprocity.

  9. Great. I also retired to Mexico and resell crafts back to USA. What I didn’t understand is how he gets new clients as there is always a drop off of old customers. He got his first customers from conracts in Seattle and San Francisco (I’ve lived in both places.) Then he mentions that face-to-face is best way to get clients. How can he do that from Mexico? I’m going to get his book!

    • Hi Joe – I hustled my first two years and got most of my clients via networking. For the last 5+ years, most new clients have come in via referrals from existing/past clients as well as my own website. My business continues to increase even without my physical presence. Also, I’m happy to say that my retention rate with my clients is pretty high.

  10. Layn: you just need to decide ‘exactly’ what you want.
Nick, Sean, awesome: this is basically what I am doing! Sadly or not so sadly I’m tied to a job I love, but if I can wean myself off it, I’ll be joining the nomad / permanent holiday lifestyle soon!!!! Sucks to love what you do :-)

  12. Thanks for letting us mothers and fathers know that being a family does not prevent us from being independent location entrepreneurs. In fact, I think, as you do, that you are teaching your children some of the most valuable lessons of their life by watching you create the future you desire.
