For the last 2 months, I’ve only taken cold showers.
Why?
Because Nick Reese challenged me to do it when we recorded last week’s podcast session back in March, and now I’m afraid if I break the streak I won’t want to start again.
Bryn and my friends think I’m crazy. They’re probably right.
But call it a coincidence — things have been going pretty well since I turned on that cold water!
It is safe to say a number of people want to start an online-side hustle business. However, I believe many of us are paralyzed with preconceived notions that there is too much too learn to accomplish this quickly.
Personally, I used to believe to achieve success online you needed to know how to code, develop beautiful web sites, and be a social media expert!
Today I want to push those self-limiting thoughts out of your mind and explain how you can side-hustle online without knowing all of that technical stuff!
Heyo! Side Hustle Nation is a year old, and you know what that means?
Time to share the results of my first “serious” attempt at building something more than just a personal blog.
And, for the sake of comparison, I’ll share the results alongside those of The Side Hustle Show podcast to see which has been the more effective way of reaching new people and spreading the side hustle goodness.
My latest side hustle experiment landed me on the homepage of one of the world’s 200-most popular sites.
This story has its origins last summer when I talked with AnarchoFighter, the Top-Rated Fiverr seller who earned enough cash on the platform to buy a house.
I began tentatively, selling pdf copies of my books, but then got a little more adventurous. This post explores why I think I was featured on the homepage, how you can set yourself up for similar exposure, and how to make the most of it when it happens.
Digging through my analytics last week, I stumbled on a surprising find:
SlideShare had driven more referral traffic to SideHustleNation so far this year than Twitter or Facebook.
I was surprised because
It’s a tiny fraction of the size of those other platforms.
I only have 6 presentations there (2 of which were duds).
I have a grand total of 77 SlideShare followers.
So how do they send so much traffic? Let’s take a look.
You know the feeling you get when you’re surrounded by your friends and family?
Or when you’re in a big crowd of fans cheering on the same team?
It’s a sort of happiness, comfort, support, and understanding, right?
Well, at least for me it is.
When you’re with your people, there’s a collective energy that’s hard to describe.
Earlier this year, Bryn and I switched cell phone providers from Verizon to Ting.
Our bill last month was $59 for 2 iPhones, less than half what we were paying at Verizon.
Over the course of the year, we’ll save $804 or more.
(Our average Verizon bill in 2013 was $126.26.)
So what’s Ting?
It’s OK, I’d never heard of them either.
What’s the most important skill for entrepreneurs?
Ask a dozen people and you’ll probably get a dozen answers.
Sales is a popular response. After all, if an entrepreneur can’t sell customers on his product, team members on the vision, or investors on the potential, the business won’t go anywhere.
Hiring is considered another critical skill. Getting the right people on the bus, in Good to Great speak.
As adults (gasp), we face dozens of questions everyday:
What should I wear?
What should I have for breakfast?
What route should I take to work?
What should I listen to on the way? (hint: try a podcast)
Most of these questions are pretty small and trivial. The answer you choose probably won’t have any lasting long-term impact on your life.
I mean, Cheerios vs. toast, not exactly a game-changer.
But what about the deeper questions?
